The Trifinio Fraternidad transboundary biosphere reserve is a tri-national biosphere reserve located between El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. It is the first transboundary biosphere reserve in Central America and represents a major contribution to implementation of the Mesoamerican Corridor. It includes key biodiversity areas, such as Montecristo National Park and a variety of forest ecosystems. For more information, visit: http://www.unesco.org/new/en/natural-sciences/environment/ecological-sciences/man-and-biosphere-programme/

Ramsar Sites are wetlands considered to be of international importance. The international convention which forms the basis for their identification is commonly referred to as the "Ramsar Convention" after the city in Iran where the convention was signed in 1971. The Convention is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. There are currently over 2,200 Ramsar Sites around the world. They cover over 2.1 million square kilometres, an area larger than Mexico. For more information, visit: www.ramsar.org

This map was developed for the WASH section of the UNHCR by CartONG. It displays boreholes assessed by WASH focal points in different refugee sites and provides information on different types of pumps that are used, the depth in meter and the energy source. It also provides information on the concentration of chemical pollutants in water such as nitrate, arsenic and ammonia. For more information, visit: http://wash.unhcr.org/wash-gis-portal/

This layer presents ecohydrology engineering solutions that are used in 20 demonstration sites worldwide, which apply ecohydrology as a way of dealing with environmental challenges through engineering solutions. Since 2011, UNESCO-IHP promotes the establishment of various demosites around the world to apply ecohydrology principles and solutions in watersheds at all scales, to solve both social and environmental issues. The full data are available online. For more information, visit the Ecohydrology Web Platform: http://ecohydrology-ihp.org/demosites/

This layer presents wastewater discharge points where comprehensive studies indicate whether or not the discharge adversely affects the environment. In 2012, 6.1% of discharge points had been studied, out of which 1.3% were affecting the environment. Such information was provided by Member States to the Commission. Those data were collected from the reporting of European Union Member States, as part of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) implementation. The Directive concerns the collection, treatment and discharge of urban waste water and the treatment and discharge of waste water from certain industrial sectors. Its objective is to protect the environment from the adverse effects of the above mentioned waste water discharges. For more information, visit the UWWTD waterbase website: www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/waterbase-uwwtd-urban-waste-water-treatment-directive-4#tab-european-data

Return flow ratio measures the percent of available water previously used and discharged upstream as wastewater. Higher values indicate higher dependence on treatment plants and potentially lower water quality in areas that lack sufficient treatment infrastructure and policies. Arid areas with low water use are shown in grey, and scored as low stress when calculating aggregated scores.

Ramsar sites are wetlands recognized for their international importance, according to the eponymous Convention (signed in 1971, entered into force in 1975). The Convention's mission is "the conservation and wise use of all wetlands through local and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world". As of March 2017, there are over 2200 Ramsar sites around the world, covering over 2.1 million km².For more information about wetlands of international importance, visit the convention's website: http://www.ramsar.org/about/the-importance-of-wetlands

This layer presents estimation of the mean annual blue water footprint of national production for the period 1996-2005. The water footprint is a measure of human’s appropriation of freshwater resources. The blue water footprint refers to consumption of blue water resources (surface and ground water).Estimations are given in million cubic meter per year (MCM/year). Disaggregated data per sectors are available in the table: agricultural production, industrial production and domestic water.A detailed description of the methodology and results can be found in the main report available here: http://temp.waterfootprint.org/Reports/Report50-NationalWaterFootprints-Vol1.pdf For more information, visit the Water Footprint Network website: http://temp.waterfootprint.org/?page=files/WaterStat

International virtual-water flows are calculated by multiplying, per trade commodity, the volume of trade by therespective average water footprint per ton of product in the exporting nation. Here, virtual grey water flows through trade of agricultural and industrial products for the period 1996-2005 is considered.Estimations are given in million cubic meter per year. In the table, data are also available disaggregated per types and import/export: a crop products, animal products, and industrial products.A detailed description of the methodology and results can be found in the main report available here: http://temp.waterfootprint.org/Reports/Report50-NationalWaterFootprints-Vol1.pdf For more information, visit the Water Footprint Network website: http://temp.waterfootprint.org/?page=files/WaterStat

The national water saving of a country as a result of trade in a certain commodity is calculated as the net import volume of this commodity times the water footprint of the commodity per commodity unit in the country considered. A negative sign means a net national water loss instead of a saving. Here, green water savings through the trade of industrial and agricultural products are considered. Annual estimations are given for the period 1996-2005, in million cubic meter per year. In the table, data are also disaggregated per commodities: crop products, animal products, and industrial products.Methodology and results can be found here: http://temp.waterfootprint.org/Reports/Report50-NationalWaterFootprints-Vol1.pdf For more information, visit the Water Footprint Network: http://temp.waterfootprint.org/?page=files/WaterStat

This layer represents estimation of the mean annual green water footprint of national consumption for the period 1996-2005. The water footprint is a measure of human’s appropriation of freshwater resources. The green water footprint is the volume of green water (rainwater) consumed, which is particularly relevant in crop production. Estimation are given in cubic meter per capita per year. In the table, data are also available disaggregated per sectors: agricultural production, industrial production and domestic water use.Methodology and results can be found in the main report: http://temp.waterfootprint.org/Reports/Report50-NationalWaterFootprints-Vol1.pdf . This layer presents estimation of the mean annual grey water footprint of national production for the period 1996-2005. The water footprint is a measure of human’s appropriation of freshwater resources. The grey water footprint is the volume of freshwater required to assimilate the load of pollutants based on existing ambient water quality standards.Estimations are given in million cubic meter (MCM) per year. Disaggregated data per sectors are available in the table: agricultural production, industrial production and domestic water. The main report on the subject is available here: http://temp.waterfootprint.org/Reports/Report50-NationalWaterFootprints-Vol1.pdf .
