    The dataset covers the Counties of Turkana and Marsabit in northern Kenya. It includes borehole records with some geological and water quality measurements. It is part of the project "HYDROGEOLOGICAL MAPPING OF TURKANA and MARSABIT AQUIFERS" that was carried out by Rural Focus and SWAS WATER SURVEYS. A significant portion of the data that was required for these datasets was collected from various organizations including Oxfam, the Catholic Diocese of Lodwar, JICA, and the WRA of Kenya. The dataset has undergone improvements in accuracy and consistency while being normalized to align with UNESCO's groundwater data collection template.

    The FRIEND/Nile project, implemented in two phases (2001-2006 and 2007-2013), aimed to enhance water resources management in the Nile Basin through regional cooperation, capacity building, and applied hydrological research. Initiated under the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (IHP) and funded by the Flemish Government of Belgium, the project engaged key institutions across five Nile Basin countries—Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania. The project focused on improving understanding of the river's hydrological regime through collaborative research and data sharing.

    Phase I (2001-2006) established technical and institutional cooperation, emphasizing four key research components: Rainfall-Runoff Modeling, Sediment Transport and Watershed Management, Flood Frequency Analysis, and Drought and Low Flow Analysis. Over 20 training workshops and technical meetings were conducted, enhancing the capacity of researchers and institutions within the region. The project facilitated data acquisition, model development, and technical publications, laying the foundation for improved transboundary water governance.

    Phase II (2007-2013) expanded on these efforts by addressing new challenges such as eco-hydrology, stochastic modeling, and erosion and sediment transport. It introduced advanced hydrological models, improved performance monitoring, and evaluated climate change impacts on water availability in the Nile Basin. The project contributed to enhanced scientific cooperation, strengthened institutional frameworks, and provided policy-relevant insights to support sustainable water resource management.

    Recognizing the value of transboundary water systems and the fact that many of them continue to be degraded and managed in fragmented ways, the Global Environment Facility Transboundary Water Assessment Programme (GEF TWAP) was developed. The Programme aims to provide a baseline assessment that identifies and evaluates changes in these water systems caused by human activities and natural processes, and the consequences such have on dependant human populations. The project is the first truly global comparative assessment for transboundary aquifers, lakes, rivers and large marine ecosystems, as well as a thematic evaluation of the open ocean, through institutional partnerships that hope to seed future global assessments. The project results are envisioned to assist the GEF and other international organizations in setting priorities for supporting the conservation of transboundary water systems.     This portal gives access to the map based results from the Groundwater component of the Transboundary Waters Assessment Programme. The data shown in this portal have been made available by national experts from countries involved in the TWAP Groundwater project. It also includes the results from scenario analyses using the global WaterGAP model (University of Frankfurt, Germany) and a study on groundwater systems of small island developing states, also called SIDS (Simon Frasier University, Canada). The Hub provides access to the UNEP-recognized Lead Service Line Replacement Cost Calculator (LSLRCC), a free, multilingual tool that models project costs, informs risk-based investment, and supports compliance with the U.S. EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI) and State Revolving Fund (SRF) programs.

    Recognized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and international sustainability networks, the Hub advances key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11).

    Through the integration of climate-adaptive drinking water infrastructure planning strategies, the Hub supports communities in managing risks from flooding, drought, and extreme weather while fostering resilient, lead-free, and sustainable drinking water systems.

    This dataset represents the digitized version of the Geological Map of Somalia (scale 1:1,500,000), compiled between 1987 and 1991 and printed in 1994. The map was edited and coordinated by E. Abbate, M. Sagri, and F.P. Sassi, with contributions from the Faculty of Geology, Somali National University (Mogadishu) and the Universities of Florence and Padua, Italy, along with several Somali and international collaborators. The map provides a comprehensive overview of Somalia’s geological formations, stratigraphy, and structural features, covering the Gulf of Aden margin, central basins, and the Indian Ocean coastal belt. Lithological units range from Precambrian crystalline complexes to recent Quaternary deposits, with detailed symbology distinguishing volcanic, sedimentary, and metamorphic sequences. The original map also incorporates tectonic structures, fault systems, and stratigraphic cross-sections that are not included in the SHP file, but the original map is provided georeferenced in EPSG:32638 - WGS 84 / UTM zone 38N.

    The digitization process involved georeferencing, vectorization, and attribute assignment of geological units and structures to enable spatial analysis within modern GIS environments. This dataset supports research and decision-making in natural resource management, groundwater assessment, mineral exploration, land-use planning, and academic studies. During the digitization process, the original projection of the map was not specified, requiring approximate control points for georeferencing. As a result, minor distortions may remain, and the spatial alignment is not perfectly accurate.

The present dataset compiles all freshwater quality data that is available under open data policy (CC BY 4.0 or equivalent) at the GEMStat database for global water quality (www.gemstat.org). It includes over 20,000,000 measurements on 608 water quality parameters, covering 13,660 stations in 37 countries over the time period from 1906 to 2023.

    GEMStat is operated by the GEMS/Water programme of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and hosted at the International Centre for Water Resources and Global Change (ICWRGC) and the German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG). The data in GEMStat is provided by National Hydrological Services of UN member states.
