CLARITY-Africa aims to generate novel transdisciplinary knowledge and trigger policies and practices that enhance resilience and adaptive capacity to the health effects of climate change in Africa’s cities.

Aim

To engage citizens of African cities in flood awareness and measurement activities, including measuring and recording flood high water marks and estimating flood durations. 

How to participate

Flood high water marks (i.e., a visible indication of the highest level reached by floodwaters during a specific event) will be recorded (by text and photo submission) by citizen scientists within 24 hours of a flood event. Staff gauges will be installed alongside instructions (i.e., to conduct and upload measurement) at selected sampling locations at the start of the campaign to aid in accurate measurement, and citizens will be trained in its use. Citizens will also be asked to estimate the duration of the flood (i.e., the number of minutes the surface water exceeded 5cm at the point of the gauge) and the time at which it reached its maximum depth.
