Fountains of Bulgaria is an interactive map showcasing free public drinking water sources across Bulgaria. Its ultimate goal is to combat plastic pollution by encouraging people to choose tap water over bottled alternatives. The platform already features over 1,900 drinking fountains, cafés, and restaurants that offer free bottle refills - and it continues to grow every day.

How to participate
Anyone can join by:
🗺️using the card and filling your water bottles instead of purchasing bottled water;
📍adding a fountain to the map
☕ adding a restaurant that would fill a visitor's water bottle for free

Impact and insights
-The map has been accessed over 618,000 times (this doesn’t include the app) -Over 1,900 refill points are now available nationwide -Dozens of cafes joined encouraging tap water over bottled -Together with national media and NGOs, we’ve organized clean-up actions on World Cleanup Day, World Water Day and beyond - We have spoken at the Sofia Human Right Forum about the human right to free water, as well as on many occasions on National TV on the importance of free tap water at coffees and restaurants -In 2019, we were among the 30 semi-finalists in the European Social Innovation Competition from 500+ projects fighting single-use plastics - In 2024, we were invited to a dedicated working group at Sofia Municipality, and together we developed the city’s first official 3-year plan for restoring, building and maintaining public fountains, supported by the first dedicated budget for the fountains voted by the Sofia municipality councilProject data
