Water stories: explore, compare and share

One narrative, several ways to explore. This guided demo combines text, maps, dashboards, images and video. Follow a reference in the text to change what you see.

Choose your pace. Use Previous / Next, or open the scrolling article. Explore the same capabilities in Terria with compositions or Terria with classic resizable windows.

Two sources, two purposes. The map shows a chlorophyll-a COG time series for the Dnipro Reservoir. The dashboard, chart and animation use synthetic demonstration data. They do not describe the reservoir or establish a relationship between the two sources.

Four steps: read a question, explore map scenes, compare charts and filters, and follow the evidence.
A guided journey with visualizations you can explore.

01 · Put the story on the map

A map helps locate a question. This scene shows the monthly chlorophyll-a series for the Dnipro Reservoir, in June 2024.

Try it: show the annual scene and return to the monthly scene. The narrative stays in place while the map changes.

Zoom and pan to explore the map. A saved scene keeps the camera, layers and time selection. The next chapter also changes the position of the narrative.

02 · Change the scale of the story

This saved view shows the annual resolution of the same COG series. Text appears on the right, giving the map visual priority.

The scene preserves its camera, layers and time state. Return to the previous chapter to compare the monthly and annual views.

Keep the sources distinct. The date and resolution belong to the map layer. The synthetic dashboard observations are presented separately.

03 · Ask questions of the data

The dashboard contains 20,000 synthetic observations. Its indicators, map, time series and table respond to the same filter.

Try it: show Chile: 3,334 records. Then highlight the time series or reset all countries.

The reference highlights a widget inside the dashboard without moving the story text. You can also use the dashboard’s own Country and Date controls.

04 · Bring text, maps and charts together

This composition combines a map and a dashboard beside the narrative. Use the Map / Dashboard / Both controls to explore the components. On mobile, switch between Map and Dashboard.

One reference, two changes: show the annual scene and filter Chile.

This demonstrates coordinated components. The Dnipro map and the synthetic dashboard have independent sources and must not be interpreted as related measurements.

05 · Let the narrative guide the view

As this paragraph enters view, the story focuses on Chile automatically. The counter should show 3,334 records without a click.

This reference responds to the visible text. You can show all 20,000 records and then return to Chile by clicking the reference above.

In a scrolling article, these references connect the progress of the narrative with changes in maps and charts. Navigation always remains under your control.

06 · Share an idea with a chart

An image can make an idea easy to remember and share. This illustrative chart shows how a monthly trend can support a narrative.

Synthetic data. The index rises from 18 in January to 44 in July and ends at 19 in December. It does not represent observations from the map or dashboard.

The image is stored in CKAN’s image library and reused through a permanent URL, without embedding base64 data in the story.

Synthetic monthly series: 18, 20, 22, 25, 31, 39, 44, 37, 30, 24, 21 and 19. The maximum is in July.

07 · Tell the story in motion

The same illustrative series can be presented as an animation. Use the video controls to play, pause or seek.

Video description: a blue line progresses from January to December. The index rises from 18 to 44 in July and falls to 19 in December. The video has no audio.

The video does not start automatically. Changing chapters pauses playback so it does not keep running out of view.

12 seconds · synthetic time series · no audio.

08 · Follow the story back to its sources

You have explored the main capabilities: layouts for text and media, saved COG scenes, embedded dashboards, click and in-view references, reusable images, charts and video.

Use Previous / Next to revisit a chapter, or open the scroll version. For resizable classic windows and optional playback in composed stories, explore the Terria demo.

Open the synthetic dashboard data. In CKAN, editors can reorder chapters and reuse templates. In Terria, authors can capture and share views. The CKAN demo also links to a mixed story with resizable classic windows.
